What’s It All About….Sadness?

I was reading a FB post about the new movie “Manchester By The Sea.”  This movie is about a man taking over guardianship of his nephew after his brother dies unexpectedly.  It is getting really great reviews, but I was curious about the FB post about the movie.  To summarize, it was between people who were saying it was a good movie but it was really sad.  The person who made the post said they were surprised by how sad it was.

Sad?  Surprised?  Isn’t this life?  Isn’t life about all its shares of ups and downs?  This is a movie about a “sad” subject, and it was released around a holiday that is supposed to be surrounded by happy images.  Is this curious timing or is it just about life?

I’ve been on this journey for 8 ½ years.  It was a shock when it happened.  I stumbled, fell a lot, stumbled some more, but I tried to get back up.  I probably stumbled more than I care to admit.  But I did try to keep getting up.  It wasn’t pretty.  There were a lot of tears.  There were also a lot of learning experiences for me, too, and I assume they will continue.

I feel a real solidarity with any person who is reading this blog because you probably have gone through a lot too.  Feelings come up at lots of different times, in different places, and with the people we care about.  I believe the sadness will always be there, in some way, shape, or form.  How we deal with our sadness and help ourselves move on:  that’s the gift and the dilemma.

I’m excited to see this movie but not because it is sad.  I’m excited to see this movie because it is real life.  I hope to embrace it as best as I can along this little journey we call life.
